Former Sinai-Grace physician charged with abducting daughter to his native Russia.

WEST BLOOMFIELD -- Federal authorities brought international kidnapping charges Tuesday against a former West Bloomfield physician, alleging he snatched his 7-year-old daughter from his ex-wife the day after Christmas and flew her to his native Russia.

Dr. Victor Nathan Adlai, 42, contacted Sinai-Grace Hospital from Moscow on Jan. 9 to say he was quitting his job as an anesthesiologist, according to records filed in federal court in Detroit. Adlai had been due to return from a scheduled vacation on Jan. 5.

Russia is not a signatory to an international civil agreement on child abductions signed by the United States at The Hague in 1988.

The United States also has no applicable extradition treaty with Russia, but the charges were filed so Adlai can be arrested if he returns to the country, said Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit.

SCRANTON – A Denmark man has filed a petition in federal court to have his daughter returned to him, alleging that the child’s mother abducted the 2-year-old from Denmark and brought the child to live with her family in Hazleton.

According to the petition, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, the child’s father, Kristijan Barbul, and mother, Helen Lenka Nikolic, had executed a “Statement of Care and Responsibility” in which the parents agreed to “jointly care for and take responsibility” for their child under Danish law.

While Nikolic’s father, Jon Nikolic, of Hazleton, was visiting his daughter in Denmark in August, he “diverted” Barbul by suggesting they go shopping together, and while they were out, Helen fled with the child to a shelter and subsequently left Denmark, the petition alleges.

Dad has ‘beautiful’ reunion with boy whose mother abducted him to Brazil

Choking back tears that had been building up for more than four and a half years, a New Jersey father tried to describe the emotions he felt at finally being able to hold and hug his son and tell the boy how much he loved him.

“It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen since his birth. It was incredible. Amazing. I got to see my son,” David Goldman told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira Tuesday by phone from Brazil.

The previous day, accompanied by U.S. Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, Goldman had finally reached the end of a nightmare that began in June 2004 when his wife, Bruna, left with their son, Sean, for a two-week trip to visit family in her native Brazil. She never came back.

FEDERAL police have searched the office, home and rubbish of one of Australia's foremost child-welfare experts in their hunt for a Sydney businesswoman who fled Australia with her four-year-old son in defiance of the Family Court.

Emeritus professor at the University of South Australia, Freda Briggs, said federal officers had questioned her about Melinda Stratton's whereabouts. Ms Stratton, who has an MBA and speaks French and German, fled the country in April with son Andrew, saying she had lost faith in the Family Court.

Her estranged husband, NSW deputy fire chief Ken Thompson, has been waging a public campaign to find his son, using the internet, bus shelters and billboards here and in Europe.

Interpol has issued alerts in 187 countries and the Hague Convention on International Child Abductions has been activated. The Family Court has issued a publication order, allowing the parties to the case to be identified.

Professor Briggs is one of several child-abuse campaigners contacted by Ms Stratton since she fled.

Ms Stratton has also arranged for two letters to be delivered to The Australian, the most recent of which was received on Friday. It contains defamatory allegations about Mr Thompson that he strenuously denies.

"When the police came here, they said, 'Do you know where she is?' I told them the truth, 'No, I do not'," Professor Briggs said yesterday.

She said police wanted the envelope that contained the letter from Ms Stratton "although it should be obvious to them that ... someone else posted (it) locally".

"She's not dumb," Professor Briggs said. "She's obviously emailed the letters as attachments to someone else who posted them for her. I wouldn't mind betting that she used two different people."

Professor Briggs said she did not condone Ms Stratton's decision to flee with Andrew.

"I tried (in an earlier phone call) to persuade her to come back, but she refused," Professor Briggs said.

[FAMILY TRAGEDY] From Tel Aviv to İstanbul: One man’s search for his daughter PDF Print E-mail

When Jacques Chelouche kissed his 4-year-old daughter goodbye on April 8, 2004, nothing could have foretold that this was the beginning of a distressing battle for the right to see his child -- a battle that would involve no less than 50 trips to Turkey, half a dozen court decisions and immeasurable anxiety and frustration.

Parental child abductions are complex and confusing enough when they occur within one country's borders. International instances only increase legal obstacles, waiting periods and emotional trauma for all parties involved. On paper, the case of little Caroline Chelouche is anything but exceptional. Removal or retention of a child across an international border by one parent -- the usual definition for international parental child abduction -- is by far the most common kind of child abduction. Yet every case is unique and each deserves its facts to be carefully recalled.

Three years of judiciary battles
